This article is based on the synthesis diagram of the transformation in the port area of the Mediterranean cities, in order to build a general definition of the term deindustrialization which is popular used in the discussion of the post-industrialization era.

Under the concept of deindustrialization, three Mediterranean cities – Genoa, Marseille and Barcelona are analysed as study cases in which the challenges and problems during the process of urban renewal and reconstruction in the seafront area are revealed from their valuable experiences. The aim of that analysis is to review the diversity of the multiple solutions and to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages conceal under the complexity of the progress in the seafront development plan and project, which can offer to other coastal cities the references to procedure of decision-making and implement.
